This chapter analyses the work of Jayne Anne Phillips, and in particular her novel Machine Dreams. Phillips recognizes that although the American urge to myth has been forced underground, with modern expressions of it being secretive and at best shared by the few, this nevertheless brings myth very close to the wellsprings of creativity. In this way, her work approaches both Jungian and Freudian understandings of the relationship between dream and myth.
