This chapter draws on observations from ethnographic fieldwork among mainly Senegalese migrants and their children in Italy to launch a sustained reflection on the shifting valences of ‘African’ and ‘Blackness’ in the context of a ‘Europe’ whose identity is itself subject to contest and transformation in the twenty-first century. Senegalese in Italy today are still coming to terms with what it means to be ‘African’ in a European context seemingly dominated by the notion that they are outsiders, and not just to Europe and the local labour market but somehow to modernity itself. In response they prove to be fluid, moving in and out of traditional languages, social contexts and memories of their former selves.

Keywords:   Italy, Senegalese, Europe, ethnography
